What We Liked:
First of all, this app has been absolutely addictive for my children. They think Boing is so incredibly cute. They LOVE the reward app Planet Boing! And they’re basically excited to play with him no matter where he leads.
Their favorite game is the polar bears with the letter matching. The phonics game where they form syllables is a bit tricky because it requires some slingshot action, comparing the written syllables to the penguins etc. although they do like it when I play with them (as long as I don’t fling snowballs faster than they do!) They enthusiastically rate the app with their whole body (my three and six-year-olds).
It does take quite a while to get through each of the steps (there are three steps in each of the three levels), which encourages a lot of repetition on the part of your child. The tiered advancement through the levels in combination with the repetition is a great strategy for success.
The phonics are really pretty accurate and even include vowel teams like ‘ir’ ‘ur’ etc. in the spelling game. The syllable-based game is a rarity in the world of apps, but it’s a time tested educational technique. Children were once taught with syllabaries before they tackled full words (some phonics programs still teach blending consonant-vowel pairs before tackling CVC words) – it’s really neat to have a game like this included that fills that gap.
What We Didn’t Like:
Like many early spelling apps, not all of the words included in the spelling portion are phonetically regular or early to read for emerging readers. Words like ‘lion’ for example, show up in the first spelling level instead of sticking with CVC words like cat, mat etc. The phonetic pronunciations for these more complicated words are still pretty accurate though. Some of the word associations in the letter matching game also start with long vowel sounds instead of short vowels (‘I like island’ for example).
Overall:
With tiered instruction, detailed tracking, an addictive, integrated rewards app, and appealing game play for young learners, i Learn With Boing: Ice Land Adventures! has great appeal for both parents and children. The sound phonics-based approaches for early reading and spelling combined with letter recognition skills pack a good deal of educational value into this fun app.
My daughter loves the i Learn apps - they are fun and educational at the same time!
I have 4 kids aged 3- 8 and LOVE this app. We have the whole series and they love it as well. You can track their progress and see what they need more practice with and what they have mastered. Highly recommend!!!

Some bad moments
Very little educational value and constant spam to receive more gifts, which are really just links to buy more of their products. Highly unrecommended.
I paid for the full version and it has not installed! Three emails have been sent to support with no response! Its a waste of $2.99!
App is great but the advertisements are sooooooo annoying! If I had known how the advertisements would be I would not have gotten this app.

I have never rated an app, but this app is so annoying that I had to. It freezes all the time, and even with the full version, ads for games within the same company CONSTANTLY pop up and annoy my toddler and me. Double whammy of frustration!!! Fix it!!!
